Communities Without Walls
When we speak of community we usually have in mind more than the neighborhoods and residences in which we live — more than bricks-and-mortar. We usually also mean that invisible web of relationships that sustains our personal growth and spiritual deepening — a “virtual container” which, like a church congregation, exists independent of building walls.
An inspiring example of such a community is Jubilados in Santa Fe (the Spanish word — used to refer to the elders — means the joyful ones). This active community of elders evolved from a sustained, decade-long commitment to “provide conscious-aging educational programs, stimulate community service and create demonstration communities where residents care for each other, the larger community and the earth.”
The upcoming Spring 2007 issue of Itineraries will explore in depth this and other elder circles initiatives around the country that are creating new models of virtual community.
