Aging in Community

Community-wide Initiatives

AARP defines “livability” as a “community having affordable and appropriate housing, supportive community features and services, and adequate mobility options, which together facilitate personal independence and the engagement of residents in civic and social life.”

Across the country, agencies and organizations are sponsoring demonstration projects and community-based initiatives to identify best practices and develop standards. Notable among these efforts is the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Active Living by Design and Active Living Leadership initiatives and the Elder-Friendly Communities Initiative of the City of Cleveland, which publishes a 74-page Guide to Elder Friendly Community Building (Download as PDF).
